David C. Kirkwood

July 11th, 1977

DETAILS: On July 11, 1977 Constable Kirkwood, along with his training officer, was assisting plain clothes officers in executing an arrest warrant. He positioned himself at the side of a shed in the rear yard of the residence to cover the rear exit. The suspect shot Constable Kirkwood from an upstairs window. The officer was struck in the head and killed instantly.

January, about 55 years ago...

DETAILS: Sgt. Tuckey was on his final shift as a motorcycle patrol officer as he was just promoted to Sgt. and was transferring to the morality section. A motor vehicle ran a stop sign striking his sidecar throwing him 60 feet. He was unconscious for 32 days. He recovered but was off for over two years. When he returned to work he was assigned to the courts due to having vision problems and had lost his sense of smell and taste. On Jan.21, 1970 he stood up and called court to order and dropped dead.

Jeffrey Armstrong

May 13th, 1963

DETAILS: Cst. Armstrong was in his first week of police training, preparing for an inspection with a fellow recruit when the other recruit noticed that his service revolver had some dust on it. He removed the firearm from his holster to clean it, and it discharged striking Cst. Armstrong in the stomach. He passed away shortly after. Born January 11, 1940 he was 23 years of age at the time of his passing. Jeffrey was single.

George Constantineau

DETAILS: Constable Constantineau had just completed a motorcycle escort at the French Embassy. He was returning to the station when crossing the newly opened Bytown Bridge. His motorcycle struck an 8 curb and he was thrown and struck his head which resulted in his death. The bridge had only been opened 12 hours and this was the second accident.

Thomas Stoneman

October 29th, 1945

DETAILS: Detective Stoneman was working on a special assignment attempting to locate a stolen vehicle. The vehicle had been used in a daring theft of automatic weapons from the Canadian War Museum. On October 24, 1945, at 0102 hours Detective Stoneman and a fellow officer approached three youths who were suspected of having just broken into cars. Unknown to the officers, the youths were armed with handguns stolen in a previous break and enter. One of the suspects shot Detective Stoneman. After a running gun battle two suspects were arrested. The third suspect was arrested two days later and a stolen Thompson sub-machine gun, from the War Museum, was recovered. Five days later Thomas Stoneman died of his wounds.
