Circumstances

Constable Morgan Russell was 54 years of age and served as a Police Constable for over 33 years. Constable Russell started his policing career with the Innisfil Police in October 1989 and stayed on when the South Simcoe Police Service was formed in 1997.

Constable Russell was a frontline officer but throughout his career, he also served as a founding member of the Emergency Response Unit for 22 years, a coach officer, a trained crisis negotiator, and a member of the recruiting team conducting interviews and presenting to local colleges.

On October 11, 2022, Constable Russell and fellow officer Constable Devon Northrup were shot in an ambush attack while responding to a disturbance call at a home in Innisfil. Both officers were transported to hospital where they succumbed to their injuries.

Constable Russell is survived by his wife and two children.

The suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
