Circumstances
Constable Northrup was a member of the Toronto Police Service, having joined in 1989 as a Court Officer and sworn in as a police officer in 1999. He faithfully served the citizens of Toronto for more than 31 years. He started his career with CourtServices and was assigned to 11 Division when he became a police officer in 1999. He was a member of 52 Division since 2008. He was also a proud member of the Chief’s Ceremonial Unit. He was 55 years of age and was an experienced and well-respected officer.
On Thursday, July 2, 2021, PC Northrup was assigned to 52 Division’s Major Crime Unit. He was part of a team of police officers who were responding to a priority call at Nathan Phillips Square located at Queen St. W. and Bay St. in Toronto.
Shortly after midnight, he and his partner were conducting an investigation in response that priority call in the underground parking lot at Queen and Bay. During the course of this dynamic event, Constable Northrup was struck by a vehicle and died instantly.
Postscript
The male driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene and has been charged with First Degree Murder.
Constable Northrup leaves his wife of 26 years Margaret and their three children – Brennen, Samantha and Mitchell.
